Music Geek Tracks of the Day: Foo Fighters Cover Black Sabbath, Rolling Stones, and Bob Dylan

Dave Grohl can do no wrong. The iconic rocker, who has been bringing us hits since the early 90s, will soon release The Foo Fighters eighth studio album, Sonic Highways, and on October 17, the band will premiere their 8-episode documentary series of the same name on HBO.

Leading up to the premiere of the series and the Foo Fighters’ new single “Something From Nothing”, which drops on October 16, the Foos have taken up a weeklong residency at The Late Show With David Letterman. Last night they kicked off the week of performances with a ripping cover of Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs”, for which they were joined by Zac Brown, who will also appear on the Foo Fighters’ upcoming album. The cover is faithful and features an astonishing four guitars while Brown and Grohl trade off verses. Dave is clearly taken aback by the performance as he summarizes the greatness that had just unfolded before him: “Zac Brown. Blck Sabbath. Foo Fighters…what do you kids want from me!?”

Shortly after shredding Dave’s face asunder, Grohl and drummer Taylor Hawkins headed downtown to meet up with Jesse Malin and Perry Farrell. The impressive group of musicians then proceeded to cover Bob Dylan’s “From A Buick 6” and The Rolling Stones’ sultry “Miss You”. Check out both of those performances below and then let us know which of these three covers you liked the best in the comments and on Twitter!

  1. Wholee balls! Who sold their soul to get this to happen? Foo’s Sabbath? Whoever did it’s a soul well spent.

  2. !!! Knocked me from my chair to the floor. A roaring, tight performance, but true to BS. My fantasy record would be Foo Fighters playing classic/hard rock songs with a member of the original group. “Ace of Spades”, with Lemmy. “Sunshine of Your Love”, with Ginger Baker. “Spirit of Radio”, with Geddy Lee. As for reality, I’ll be happy when “Something from Nothing” drops tomorrow.
