Music Geek Track Of The Week: “Furr”

This year, my Thanksgiving looked like it came straight out of someone’s Pinterest board. From new and improved ways to reuse Mason jars to 12 different stuffing recipes, down to a chandelier that hung from a tree outside over our 30 person table. I was amazed, and, mostly, I was thankful that I had nothing to do with it, therefore I didn’t have to help clean up. The icing on the thanksgiving Turkey was the soundtrack. It weaved through old Dylan and The Smiths over to Jens Lekman and some more modern bands, but the song that I thought fit so perfectly with this commencement of winter was Blitzen Trapper’s “Furr.”

“Furr” is as folksy as a song can get. It’s a poem with a melody. The rhyme scheme is simple, but the story is clear; a simple plot about a boy turning into a dog. It makes you want to light a bonfire, bundle up in cozy sweaters, and cuddle with your pets. I can’t imagine anything better.

Blitzen Trapper is a severely underrated band with a great range in sound. Love this song. Love the whole album Furr. Check out Black River Killer if you’re into folksy story-songs, but don’t mind skewing into the darker thematic territory that folk music sometimes goes to.

So it’s a rip-off of Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess then? I guess I’m ok with that.
