Music Geek Track of the Day: ‘Wassup’ by Gold Link and Sango

An all-star collaboration of the hip-hop underground is upon us with today’s installment of MGTOTD. Two very refreshing up-and-comers, Virginia-based GoldLink (an oblique reference to pimp culture in the 60s) and Michigan-via-Seattle producer Sango (an overt reference to Sango from InuYasha) have created a visceral summer party anthem.

Reconfiguring Timbaland’s “Indian Flute,” which originally sampled “Curura” by Toto La Momposina, with heavier bass and trap-esque hi-hat trills, “Wassup” features GoldLink exploding in the kind of way where you’re more impressed by the sound of the emcee’s voice than anything else. I am on my 20th listen, and I have memorized his inflections better than his lyrics. I love when that happens.
