Music Geek Track of the Day: ‘These Aren’t The Droids’ by Neko Case and Kelly Hogan, featuring Ellie Kemper

Literally way too much awesome shit going on this video, you guys. Aside from the fact that this video was shot in our very own Meltdown Comics, and features our very good friend and talented musician Neko Case, this song about a teenage boy imagined future/dystopia is gut-clutchingly hysterical.

Neko Case, dressed as Spock with a Princess Leia hairdo, totally rags the ridiculous fantasies that teenage boys in the ’70s probably had about the future, and reimagines that future from a woman’s perspective along with Kelly Hogan, who is dressed as Chewy. During the second half of the video, it appears they are running for some sort of government position and that somehow, one of their stances is “kittens.” They have our votes, unanimously. Meanwhile, Ellie Kemper has hit a rough spot with her storm trooper spouse, and realizes she can do without her dude.

My favorite excerpt is irreverent and occurs in the first twenty when the storm trooper/suburban husband walks into his and Ellie Kemper’s house while Case rapidly lists all the ridiculous items of the future: “It seems so exciting; looks so inviting: space drinks, space clothes, space silver jump suits, space world harmony, space silver moon boots!” This list of space items reminds me of an old Mr. Show sketch in which David Cross is a white supremacist astronaut and asks a barkeep for a “space beer”.

Thought this satirical version of the future is somewhat of a dystopia–as any teenage boy paradise would predictably be–I would really like to to get my present hands on some of the future pizza, if you know what I mean. I’m hungry for pizza is what I mean. Enjoy the song!

“These Aren’t the Droids” is featured on 2776: A Levinson Bros. and Rob Kutner Presentation, a record about the history and “apocalyptic future” of humanity. Proceeds from the release go to the OneKid OneWorld Organization.
