Music Geek Track Of The Day: The Wombats’ ‘Greek Tragedy’

Named for Australian marsupials and hailing from Liverpool, The Wombats are easily one of the most exciting Brit-pop bands to cross the pond in the last decade and we are currently counting the days until the release of their third album, Glitterbug, on April 7.

The first single off the LP is “Greek Tragedy” and the accompanying video is definitely not for the faint of heart. The clip stars April Pearson (best-known to BBC viewers as Michelle Richardson from the original version of Skins) as a Wombats super-fan who will stop at nothing to get close to her favorite rock ‘n’ roll trio of singer/guitarist Matthew Murphy, drummer Daniel Haggis and bassist Tord Øverland Knudsen.

It all appears adorably innocent until the 2:40 minute mark, when things gets real.

SPOILER ALERT: There will be blood.

The Wombats first started wowing audiences with their bouncy brand of power-pop more than a decade ago, but it really wasn’t until the release of their 2007 hit “Let’s Dance To Joy Division” that their music started to spread like a virus.

In anticipation of their third album, we HIGHLY recommend you check out their first two: 2007’s The Wombats Proudly Present: A Guide To Love, Loss & Desperation and 2011’s This Modern Glitch.

If you’d like to hear another take of “Greek Tragedy,” check out the following Bastille remix. The clip is still pretty gory, but the black-and-white filter gives it an artsier feel.

For a list of upcoming European and U.S. tour dates this winter/spring, check out the band’s site. To keep track of all the activity from our favorite musical marsupials, follow The Wombats on Twitter at @TheWombats.
