Music Geek Track of the Day: ‘The Picture’ By Ty Segall From His 3-D EP

Barely a fortnight into 2015 and we already have brand new music from uber-prolific garage rocker Ty Segall to go deaf to. After taking his time to record and produce last year’s Manipulator, it appears that Segall (to whom we spoke about his previous album) is back to old habits and primed to release plenty of anthems throughout the new year.

His first offering of the year is his four-song Mr. Face EP, for which he played every instrument except drums on one track. This EP also contains two 7″ records–one blue, one red–that act as 3-D glasses when held in front of your eye balls. That extra blurry album artwork makes so much more sense now, right?

Though fans have grown accustomed to the abrasive sludge that comes out of Ty’s guitar and has become his bread and butter for the better part of the last decade, his new EP is certainly more dialed back, featuring a variety of distorted and jangly, psych-inflected guitar work. “The Picture” is the final track on this release which leans toward the latter with soothing arpeggiation that sneakily belies forlorn lyrics about the difficulties of moving on emotionally from something or someone important. Sure the themes and sentiments are vintage and universal, but Ty has always been an expert at distilling his influences, which he proudly wears on his sleeves, and refracting everything through a modern lens. Certainly he emulates his idols, but he is good enough to do it well and that is endlessly impressive.
