Music Geek Track of the Day: The Foo Fighters Debut ‘Something From Nothing’

The Foo Fighters have had the most insanely busy schedule this week. In addition to their weeklong residency at the Late Show With David Letterman, they are getting ready to premiere the first episode of their 8-episode documentary series on HBO, Sonic Highways. Their new album, titled the same as the show, will drop on November 10.

The day before the Chicago episode of Sonic Highways, The Foo Fighters have debuted the track that they recorded in the windy city with Steve Albini, the legendary Chicago-based producer (who also DJed at my college radio station) who assisted recording Nirvana’s In Utero and was also a founding member of the hugely influential post-punk band Big Black.

Though “Something From Nothing” is a little less explosive than I was expecting for a Foo Fighters lead single, it is interesting to try and suss just how the actual city may have influenced the track. From personal experience, the soul crushing cold does make it extremely hard to feel like you are alive and not just an icicle, so that could potentially have contributed to the dialed back nature of the recording. That being said, Dave Grohl‘s vocals are easily the best part of the song as he finally approaches a feral scream by the conclusion of the song.

What do you guys think of the new Foo Fighters single? You excited to hear the rest of the album when it drops this November? Let us know in the comments and on Twitter!
