Music Geek Track of the Day: Tame Impala Slow Dance in the ’70s on ‘Eventually’

It’s been a long time coming, but now it’s here. Tame Impala have finally announced that Currents, their follow-up album to 2012’s Lonerism, will be released on Friday, July 17. As a whole, the album is supposed to call to mind hip hop production, Thriller, “fried 70s funk”, and Discovery-era Daft Punk when paired with emotional ’80s balladry. That’s a hell of a lot of connections. Based off the singles we’ve heard so far–“Let It Happen”, “Cause I’m a Man”, and “Disciples”–it’s an astute description. Their newest track from the album, “Eventually”, is probably the closest to that description of them all.

“Eventually” is a well-crafted single that sees Tame Impala both exploring the new and doing what they do best. There’s the faint vocal harmonies in the background, reminiscent of The Beatles as per usual, and the slow bobbing pace of a synth love ballad that future generations will waddle out to the dancefloor for. The latter is true particularly in regards to the hazy lyrics. Frontman Kevin Parker is facing harsh, heart-broken wounds that have apparently not yet healed. But what ballad doesn’t talk about being scorned in the guise of a perfectly gooey tone? None. The only thing better than this is Parker’s AMA on Reddit last week, because crazy stories about Sean Lennon and Kanye West never get old.

We’re placing our bets now. Currents will be the easy-listening psych album of the summer, and you don’t even need to take drugs to see its colors. Just look at that Marble Madness-style artwork and you’re good to go.
