Music Geek Track of the Day: ‘Surface Envy’ by Sleater-Kinney

Good lord are we happy to have Sleater-Kinney back and sounding as good they ever have. After 8 long years without the thrashy riot grrrl outfit from Washington filling our beat-up tower speakers with galvanizing guitar hooks and muscular yawps, it is so good to hear Corin Tucker sing-yell: “Only together do we break the rules!”

Of course, all three members have dabbled with side projects in the meantime (Carrie Brownstein, who is now known for Portlandia, and Janet Weiss went on to form Wild Flag, while Tucker formed the Corin Tucker Band), but they haven’t played together since touring on their 2005 album The Woods. And there is something authentically exciting about this reunion, like they are actually happy to be creating music with each other once again, which as Andre 3000 recently demonstrated, is rare.

“Surface Envy” is angular, electric, and making us too excited for their next album No Cities To Love. I never really felt as though Sleater-Kinney finished the conversation they engaged in throughout the late 90s and early 2000s, so it will be insightful to hear what they have to add to their own dialogue ten years on.

Let us know what you guys think of the track and how stoked you are to have this classic band back in action!
