Music Geek Track of the Day: Spoon Covers ‘TV Set’ by the Cramps on CONAN

Let’s just get this out there. Spoon is just so damn good. The staying power this band has had during their career is simply amazing. “Underdog” got them some mainstream attention over the last few years and we’ll probably hear that song in movie soundtracks for the next decade or so. What’s really impressive is the band’s ability to continue on with an incredibly strong following while simultaneously staying away from common pitfalls like pandering to fans. They are musicians making music that they want to make and I believe we, the good music enjoying public, recognize the passion that goes into it.

Their performance on last night’s Conan is proof positive that the band can do the things they want–say cover a relatively unknown punk song by The Cramps from 1980–and still be as entertaining as ever.

Singer Britt Daniel belts out the old school punk lyrics as if he were playing a basement show decades ago somewhere in NYC. The band covered “TV Set” for the Poltergeist reboot–Get it? TV sets, “they’re here”–and they truly do the original justice. It also surely has the feel of a song that belongs in a horror movie with the fast tempo and relentless drums imitating a panicked heartbeat.
