Music Geek Track Of The Day: ‘Soda’ By Azealia Banks Is A Perfect Weekend Anthem

The last time I wrote about Azealia Banks was back in my best albums of 2011 post when I incorrectly predicted that she was going to be huge in 2012 off of the success of her breakout vulgar, yet amazing single, “212”. Instead of releasing her debut album Broke With Expensive Taste through her then-label Interscope in 2012, Azealia got into an insane amount of online beefs (with Pharrell, Disclosure, T.I., Angel Haze etc..), fought with her label, went through a seapunk phase (see above) and released a glut of one-off singles.

Finally in 2014, Banks split with her label after begging them to let her go and self released her once highly anticipated debut a la Beyoncé. Though the album is sort of a hodgepodge of genres with some tracks outshining others in a glaring way, it is a solid reminder that she is definitely talented beyond ignoring. I included “Soda,” my favorite track from the album below, which is grounded in the sounds of late ’80s, early ’90s hop-house (think Technotronic), and also includes a sample and vocal reference of Cassie’s “Me & U.” It is simple fun, and a very good distraction from all the other annoying noise she has become known for. It is party friendly so feel free to add this to you going-out playlists tonight.
