Music Geek Track of the Day: Sia and Giorgio Moroder Give Us “Déjà Vu”

What we wouldn’t give for influential electronic music producer Giorgio Moroder to be our Uber driver. The mustachioed, 75 year-old patriarch of electro-pop is a bottomless well of sagely and poetic love aphorisms, and he will deliver you to mysterious hotels that promise romantic encounters with ghostly Sia clones. At least this is the impression we gather from watching the music video to his recently released title track to his new album, “Déjà Vu”.

Employing the unrivaled pipes of Sia, “Déjà Vu” is an instant classic of nu-disco goodness. Crisp and soaring, lush and rapidly evolving, this is Moroder at his sharpest, once again proving he has his finger on the pulse of modern dance music (a pulse, we might add, his tracks tend to quicken).

The video tells the dream-world tale of a lovesick young man whose repeated run-ins with Sia’s many flirty doppelgängers leads to a near psychotic breakdown. Hey, we’ve all been there. While Moroder makes a few, brief appearances, Sia, keeping on brand, stays out of the spotlight.

Moroder, whose last solo studio album, Innovisions, was released a mere thirty years ago, will end his decades long moratorium (Moroderium?) with Déjà Vu on June 12th.

Also worth noting: At the very end of the video, and in a shot cut so quick you will miss it if you look away, Moroder’s mustache is dyed in strips of red, white and blue. That, alone, should be reason to watch the video clean through to the end.
