Music Geek Track of the Day: Blood Orange’s Dev Hynes & Neneh Cherry’s ‘He She Me’

Facebook made headlines in early February for tossing out their traditional male/female user gender option and introducing a third custom option, which consisted of 58 unique categories (from “agender” to “two-spirit”), and acknowledged our increasingly complex understanding of gender identity. Not even a month later, Facebook made headlines again by dropping the categories all together, instead providing a users with a blank space to specify their own preferred gender identifier, outside the restraints of traditional assumptions or judgment.

Facebook’s decision was a victory for the gender neutrality movement, which has benefited from increased visibility and engagement within pop culture the last few years. Some notable examples include the Golden Globe-winning series, Transparent, and the Emmy-nominated performance of Orange is the New Black’s Laverne Cox.

Now, Blood Orange’s Dev Hynes and singer Neneh Cherry lend their talents to the cause of gender neutrality, offering the self-affirming dreamscape track, “He She Me”. Commissioned by the UK’s high-end (and occasionally controversial) Selfridges department store, the track comes as part of the chain’s socially progressive Agender campaign, and is accompanied by the whirling, gender-bending, “Vogue”-channeling music video above.

“The film is an evolving journey through a subtle push and pull between masculinity and femininity, captured entirely in one unbroken shot,” according to the video’s director, Kathryn Ferguson. “This film has come at a time when important conversations about gender fluidity and non-binary ways of being are finally getting a lot of attention.” The video stars model Hari Nef, and is a choregraphed by Ryan Heffington.
