Kali Uchis is Colombian-born singer who inhabits the aesthetics of 60s retro soul. It seems like it could be gimmicky until you hear her music, which sounds like Mary Wells or Marlena Shaw with a modern urban twist a la Amy Winehouse. In short, Uchis can really sing, which is why it is so exciting that her new EP Por Vida debuted today via Pitchfork.
I have been waiting for “Riding Round” to come out for about year. I first heard when I was deep in a rabbit hole searching for underground hip-hop and one of the rappers I liked just happened to share a show with Uchis in LA. last winer. Using the rapper as a hype-man (he only shouted “turn up!” lol) , Uchis began singing, “Riding round with my car low; what you waiting for?” and I could instantly tell this was a “f–k you; I am gonna do me” anthem. I played the song over and over until one day it was taken down. After futile searches and trying to ask Kali about the song on Twitter, I had all but given up. Until today! Finally get to blast this on repeat the whole way home and guess what it feels like to be a grown ass woman who is her “own hustler.”
Nice to know that talentless Kim Kardashian has talentless cousins in Columbia.
Uhmmmmm … what the **** was that **** ?
Ahhh a repetitive beat while she talks in the same tone. How exactly is this nerdist? I thought you guys made nerds news :/
