Music Geek Track of the Day: ‘Pantyhose’ by TV GIRL

Sometimes, when summer is impending, its fun to gauge the ability of a seasonal shift to actually affect behavior and mood. It is dreamy and tempting to think that longer days, more sunlight, and comfy t-shirts will provide some sort of superficial gauze that will produce happiness, but rarely is it that simple of a trick. You still have to pay rent, your heart can still get broken, and sometimes your mint chocolate chip ice cream will melt before you can finish it. 🙁

French Exit, the debut release from Los Angeles-based group TV Girl is full of speciously optimistic songs that use mollifying, relaxing electronics to adorn songs that are actually somewhat distressing. Case in point: today’s track of the day,”Pantyhose” is an ebullient and sunny sounding pop song that masks really upsetting lyrics about violence and lost love. And yet, I find myself replaying the track as a sort of mesmerizing salve. TV Girl sounds like a serendipitous amalgam of the Dandy Warhols, Passion Pit, and Belle and Sebastian. Paradoxically bright and gloomy at the same time, but also perfect.
