Music Geek Track of the Day: Neon Indian’s ‘Annie’ Brings The Funk

It has been way too long since we’ve heard wonky electronic music from Alan Palomo aka Neon Indian. Grouped in with the Chillwavers at the beginning of this decade, Neon Indian pushed the boundaries of that umbrella term in 2011 with his excellent Era Extraña, but has been lamentably quiet since, only releasing a handful of songs.

With “Annie”, Palomo has confidently announce his reemergence with tropically infused space funk. I was immediately reminded of La Roux’s “Tropical Chancer” from last summer, which seemed to reference the disco-leaning Daft Punk smash hit, “Get Lucky”, from the summer before that. Palomo’s vocals have never sounded crisper though he has certainly sounded this lovelorn before. “Answer the machine,” he begs like it’s an especially melodramatic day in 1995. And just like a desperate ex who is redialing incessantly, you cannot help but hit the replay button on this one.
