Music Geek Track of the Day: ‘Millions’ by Gerard Way

After a what seemed like an eternity following the the breakup of My Chemical Romance, Gerard Way has finally returned to our cochleas with an excellent new album that is both a welcome progression and a bit of a departure from some of his groundbreaking emo work in the 2000s.

Aside from having one of the most distinguishable voices within the emo genre that really helped boost that sound into the mainstream, Way has always been a very talented visual artist, having worked animation and toy design–he even pitched a show to Cartoon Network at one point. And so not surprisingly, the most striking part about his new single “Millions” is the accompanying music video which approximates what would happen if life was actually just Windows 98 on the verge of crashing. Remember when tabs used to freak and instead of politely letting you know, they would cascade and became permanent parts of your desktop background if you tried to move them? Way has applied that idea here and it is as hard to look at as it is entrancing.

“Millions” is a brilliantly shiny pop rock gem that sits in the middle of the new album, Hesistant Alien, and it is really warming to hear Way let a little bit of light in after a notoriously dark history throughout his time recording with MCR. And this song, catchy vocal hooks and all, is not the only track that stands out. Really recommend this one, guys. Very happy to have Gerard Way back.

I keep thinking I’ve moved on from high school, and then something like this happens and I’m reminded that 16-year-old me still lives in my brain somewhere. Love it.

  2. My daughter and I are stoked. Love it… We love MCR.

  3. Katie says:

Chord Progression sounds just like something from the Black Parade. Not really that impressed, to be honest.

  4. alex says:

wow, he looks here like David Bowie

  5. This is my favourite track so far and for some reason the clip always gets me thinking Talking Heads. For those of us who loved Danger Days this isn’t such a huge leap of faith….. so keep it up Gerard! Straight to the top of the alternative chart aint bad.

  6. Kurono says:

Diggin the song. Gonna have to check the album now.

  7. Becky says:

I’m glad Gerard Way is on here because he’s not that popular. He’s amazing whatever he does

  8. ThePaulPonte says:

Most of these “music geek” suggestions are for mainstream artists. What could have been a great platform to connect people with lesser known and different acts is just random suggestions at this point.
