If youâre like me, you probably spent a considerable part of your high school years listening to Brand New. The Long Island foursome were an important part of that whole emo/alternative music wave of the early 2000s that so many of us latched on to. The groupâs first two albums, Your Favorite Weapon and Deja Entendu produced some of the most memorable songs (and lyrics) of the time. Itâs hard to forget lyrics like, âIs this the way a toy feels when its batteries run dry? I am the watch you always wear but you forget to wind.” Brand New (Brand Nizzle if youâre in the know) created songs that lingered in your mind long after listening to them.
After the groupâs 2009 release Daisy, they sadly disappeared from the music scene for ab. Many die-hard fans dismissed the record, prompting questions of whether or not the band would ever make music again given the negative response. Over the years, the foursome have mostly been playing sporadic sets of live shows, including festival slots abroad at Reading and Leeds and a stint with indie faves Modest Mouse. Fans even got a recent surprise when lyric booklets finally began being sent out for The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me after an almost year wait by those who sent in $1 to the address listed at the bottom of the liner notes.
Happily, hereâs reason to celebrate once again, the band have released their first new track, titled âMene,â in six years via their official website. The song showed up online after being debuted live at a show in Denver last week. âMeneâ clocks in at a blistering two-and-a-half minutes, but itâs got bite. The single recalls early Brand New material, which is more than okay with me. Could our favorite Long Islanders be gearing up for a new album release? We can only hope. Take a listen to the track below.
