Music Geek Track of the Day: ‘Lisa Sawyer’ By Leon Bridges Is Retro Soul Perfection

Ever since we heard the Leon Bridges’ instant classic, “Coming Home”, we’ve been waiting restively for more Sam Cook-esque, 60s emulating soul gems to add to our romantic dusk playlists. After a few weeks, which I am sure was occupied by buying the coolest clothes imaginable, Bridges is back with another perfect tune, an homage to his mother, “Lisa Sawyer”.

The track waltzes slowly along, like sensual drag of a vintage cigarette, gradually revealing the biography of the central figure in Bridges’ life. As we hear about Lisa’s religious awakening and her upbringing in New Orleans, gentle female doo-wops lap against Bridge’s rich voice while organ and horns glow in the background and brighten the corners of this beautiful ode.

Thus far, each of Bridges’ songs have transported me back to the 60s, when soul music was at its zenith, and I can’t wait for this album to drop so I can live in that era for hours at a time. Be sure to keep current on Bridges’ comings and goings by following him in Twitter, and don’t miss him on his current tour.
