Music Geek Track of the Day: ‘Friend Like Me’ as Performed by Robin Williams

When news broke earlier today that we lost Robin Williams, a man of inimitable talents whose presence was and will always be a source of light, it felt like the editorial room at the Nerdist permanently became a few shades dimmer. A man who has provided so much joy for so many decades had, in a moment, caused such a jagged and unforgiving sense of loss.

But that feeling, to be sure, was only temporary. As social feeds erupted with stills of Mork & Mindy, Aladdin, Good Will Hunting, and Patch Adams, we were all instantaneously reminded of his vibrant spirit, his goodnatured mien, and his unbelievable sense of humor. Sniffles and sighs quickly turned to laughs and smiles for all those moments we were all so lucky to have with him.

The most amazing aspect of Robin Williams legacy is that no matter how old you are, or what generation to which you belong, you have undoubtedly had an intimate moment with his work, and probably more than one of his many projects or roles means a great deal to you. They certainly do to us.

As a ’90s baby, my formative Robin Williams experience was seeing Aladdin in theaters with my parents. He was electrifying. I knew what animation was as a little kid, but that Genie became the touchstone definition of what “animated” meant. It was an entrancing, magical experience, and one I will never forget.

We’ll never have a friend quite like you again, Mr. Williams, but god were we lucky to know you. RIP, friend.

  1. I love Aladdin, but I was also thinking about his performance of Blame Canada at the 2000 Oscars.  He was literally the only person who could make that song work at the Academy Awards!
