Music Geek Track of the Day: ‘Eurydice’ by The Pains of Being Pure at Heart

The defining attribute of the Pains of Being Pure at Heart sound has always been their urgency. Sure, their bright poppy aesthetic would have been a perfect fit for a guy-gets-girl scene in a John Hughes movie. But that’s because those scenes are always about sweaty palms, flushed faces, and the churning chaos of being young and in love.

“Eurydice” finds the Brooklyn-based band subverting their usual content by referencing tragedy (Eurydice was a tragic mythological character who was separated from her true love Orpheus on two separate occasions). Though, stylistically, the band hews to their fluttering drums and their instinctively optimistic sound, they have entered much darker territory here, and it is a striking contrast.

The Pains of Being Pure At Heart will drop their new album, Days of Abandon, on April 22 via Yebo Music.
