Music Geek Track of the Day: ‘Elle’ by Rone and The National’s Bryce Dessner Sounds Dystopian

Rone is a French electronic artist whose work sounds like the turning point in a dystopian sci-fi flick, when the protagonist realizes that he’ll likely have to sacrifice either himself or someone he loves in order to prevent the ineluctable mass extinction of humanity/its moral capability. So, you know, some fun, light listening!

If you liked the dark, eerie spaces that characterized The National‘s most recent album, Trouble Will Find Me, you can doff your cap to Rone for lending his expertise to portions of the recording process. And so, perhaps as a thank you or a palliative way of the universe consistently delivering good music even as we inch closer to our own assured dystopian fates (I’m talking aliens, singularity, even more Adam Sandler movies, fennel), Bryce Dessner, one of The National’s guitarists, teamed up with Rone on “Elle” for a very ambient, disquieting track.

The song emanates sluggishly out of your speakers like heat coming off of a scorching surface on a steamy day. It builds slowly and subtly at first, but then horns kick in, somewhat triumphantly, as though to signify that the impending threat has been thwarted and that we will in fact be able to continue surviving on earth for the time being.

Rone’s new LP, Creatures will be out February 10.
