Music Geek Track of the Day: ‘Decision (Feat. Emily King)’ by Taylor McFerrin

Taylor McFerrin comes from an established pedigree of talented musicians, so it makes a lot of sense that he is associated with Brainfeeder, one of the more innovative, genre bending labels in the country, based right here in Los Angeles. With such an immense amount of historical context already built into his artistry, the idea that he would focus on the scaffolding around the monolith is almost expected: soul is the core of his sound, but all the surprising and interesting maneuvers happen in the orbital space.

On “Decisions,” featuring the wickedly talented Emily King, there is an emphasis on the fringe and the stratosphere of the track. All of those stray flourishes that sound like tractor beams and levitation fields amass to sound definitively extraterrestrial. At the center of the track we have a velvety salve, and that allows the listener to sort of look outward toward everything else.

If you dig this track, head over to NPR to listen to McFerrin’s album, Early Riser, which is out next Tuesday via Brainfeeder.
