Imagine you’re Adele. You wake up one day in your mansion, like always, and slowly get out of your fluffy, pillowy bed to check your phone because all of these super important people probably texted you while you were sleeping, and then, like it’s just another day, and you see that one of your biggest influences, THE Aretha Franklin, covered one of YOUR songs. You’d freak, right? Or you realize you’re Adele and of course this happened to you because you’re amazing and Aretha is probably your homegirl. Either way, it’s a good day.

Aretha performed a knockout cover of “Rolling In The Deep” on David Letterman a few days ago and it was exactly what you’d expect: transcendent. She made it her own by bringing it back a few decades, adding some tambourine and a palpably gospel timbre. Her now-raspy voice added an extra oomph, something covers previously haven’t brought (though, the John Legend cover is another favorite). Aretha’s song choice has solidified the fact that “Rolling In The Deep”, a track that was released in 2010, is firmly planted in the canon of classics. This assertion is made stronger by the fact that Aretha ultimately dovetails Adele’s song into “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough”. You’re killin’ it girl.

A very tough question now: Who did it better–Aretha or Adele? Can we now expect some sort of super sour mega collaboration to make all of our dreams com true? We sure hope so.
