MST3K Writers Parody the Ren Faire World in New Comedy Series RENFEST

The most amazing thing about RenFest is that nobody thought of it sooner. Renaissance Pleasure Faires, or Ren Faire as they’re more commonly known, seems like it should be ripe for satire. The problem with that is that jokes are too easy—yes, ha ha, it’s people dressing up in costumes and talking funny. That just seems kinda mean, considering many of us do more or less the same thing at Comic-Con (as far as the rest of the world is concerned, anyway).

But imagining the office politics behind putting a Ren Faire together? Now that’s funny. What if one guy wants to put in a sports bar? What happens when employees confuse actual English history with that of Westeros from Game of Thrones? How do you enforce historical accuracy when attendees want to wear Star Wars mash-up costumes?

Thanks to a creative team that includes Mystery Science Theater 3000‘s Trace Beaulieu and Mary Jo Pehl, former Naked Trucker Dave “Gruber” Allen, and writer Shawn Otto (whose primary credit is, weirdly, the not-at-all-comical Ben Kingsley drama House of Sand and Fog), this metaphorical mash-up of The Office and Medieval Times just hit Kickstarter. As of this writing it’s breached $21,000 en route to a final goal of $365,000.

Their Kickstarter video, which appears composed entirely of outtakes from a “real” pitch video that doesn’t exist, sets the tone:

Perks for big donors include dragon masks, lessons in editing and screenwriting from industry professionals, a personal postcard from Gruber, and even autographed copies of Shawn Otto’s ultra-serious books about politicized science and crime. (Seriously, are the rest of the crew punking him, or does he just need a break from writing depressing things?)

We’re joust about ready for the arch comedy of a show like this. But what do you want to see in it? Tudor us in comments below.
