Movie Morsels: Zack Snyder on BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE Having More Batman Than Superman

And so ends another week of cinematic reportage here at Movie Morsels. But it ain’t over just yet. So let’s see you folks into your weekend with the latest on a few little films like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Deadpool, and SPECTRE, as well as word on a King Kong vs. Godzilla remake (!), a new behind-the-scenes look at the Point Break remake, and more.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

Batman v Superman

Plenty of folks, including yours truly, had serious reservations about the way Zack Snyder handled Superman in Man of Steel, which introduced the most upbeat and positive of all superheroes to a new generation of kids via a joylessly violent film that was so dark as to make every Punisher movie look downright sunny in comparison. So I have zero problem with the reports that Snyder is choosing to pay more attention to the Caped Crusader than the Last Son of Krypton in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. His dark take on heroism is much more in line with Gotham City’s savior. Here’s what the director has to say about the sequel’s rumored shift in focus:

Only in that because it’s a different Batman than the Batman that was in the Chris Nolan movies, so we have a little bit more explaining to do — and you just had a whole Superman movie. But I think only in that way, because you need to understand where Batman is with everything. And that’s more toward the beginning, but it evens back out as it goes on.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, with Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Jesse Eisenberg, Diane Lane, Laurence Fishburne, Jeremy Irons, Holly Hunter, and Gal Gadot, lands on March 25, 2016, in 2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D.

King Kong vs. Godzilla

King Kong vs. Godzilla fight

And speaking of battles between titans over at Warner Brothers…I’ll admit I was kind of meh on both Peter Jackson’s King Kong and Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla. Both treated their subject matter a little too reverently for my tastes. But a remake of the 1962 Toho schlockfest King Kong vs. Godzilla? That’s something I can totally get behind. And with Legendary’s Kong: Skull Island moving from Universal to Warner Bros. (which controls U.S. distribution on Godzilla) that’s just what the studio is reportedly planning. In the mean time, Skull Island, due out on March 10, 2017, will be our next big-screen journey into the world of the giant ape. It’s directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts and will star Brie Larson, Tom Hiddleston, and Corey Hawkins. Samuel L. Jackson and John C. Reilly have also been linked to the film, though their casting not yet been confirmed.

Deadpool

Our favorite trash-talking merc with a mouth gets in touch with his sensitive side in an attempt to understand teen sidekick Negasonic Teenage Warhead (as played by Brianna Hildebrand) in a new Deadpool photo shared by star Ryan Reynolds. Directed by Tim Miller and co-starring Morena Baccarin, Ed Skrein, T. J. Miller, Gina Carano, Andre Tricoteux, and Leslie Uggams, the anxiously awaited superhero epic arrives on February 12, 2016.

SPECTRE

Daniel Craig’s James Bond is just getting started in the latest TV spot for SPECTRE, which offers a bit of new footage from the second 007 adventure directed by Sam Mendes. Out on November 6th, the film also stars Christoph Waltz, Lea Seydoux, Ben Whishaw, Naomie Harris, Dave Bautista, Monica Bellucci, and Ralph Fiennes.

Point Break

Surf’s up in a new featurette on the Point Break remake. Warner Brothers has also released a new poster for the film, out in 2D and 3D on December 25th. This time around, Édgar Ramírez plays Bodhi and Luke Bracey plays Johnny Utah, with support from Ray Winstone, Teresa Palmer, and Delroy Lindo. Ericson Core directs.

Adi Shankar’s Gods and Secrets

Finally today, a little something for Gleeks. Adi Shankar’s Gods and Secrets has just signed on Glee alumni Mark Salling and Josh Sussman, who will join the previously announced Max Adler, another veteran of the musical series. (Adler also now serves as associate producer on the film.) This marks the second reunion in the cast, after that of Twilight stars Kellan Lutz and Jackson Rathbone. In addition, Gods and Secrets features Denise Richards, Jane Seymour, Sharni Vinson, Alexandra Billings, Andy Milonakis, and ‘Diamond’ Dallas Page. A little something for everyone! Exploring “the darker ramifications of a world with superheroes”, the movie is directed by Dredd producer Shankar (pictured above) and Stewart Yost.
