Movie Morsels: Viola Davis and The Rock Talk SUICIDE SQUAD and SHAZAM!, INDEPENDENCE DAY 2’s Newest Star, ZOOLANDER 2 Update

While we’re all looking forward to 2015 arrivals like Inside Out and Avengers: Age of Ultron, today’s Movie Morsels has a whole lotta people talking about some of the most anticipated films in the years to come. Herein are Viola Davis on her “badass” Amanda Waller in Suicide Squad, Dwayne Johnson on Shazam!‘s Black Adam, Ben Stiller discussing the origins of Zoolander 2 — plus the latest casting announcements for Independence Day 2 and Luc Besson’s next project, and more!

Suicide Squad

Viola Davis

Viola Davis is pretty excited to take command of Task Force X, a.k.a. the Suicide Squad, in director David Ayer’s take on DC’s supervillain team. Speaking with Comic Book Resources, the actress describes her character as “a badass.”

“She’s unapologetic,” says Davis. “Everything that I’m reading and studying about her: unapologetic, no humor, just brutal. That’s me… Listen, she gets to use a gun. It’s my fantasy. Now, I would never do that in life, but when I get a gun on a set, it does something to me.”

Co-starring Will Smith, Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, and Jai Courtney, Suicide Squad lands on August 5th, 2016.

Shazam

And speaking of DC comic book properties… Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson spoke with MTV about playing Black Adam in the upcoming Shazam. The Furious 7 star says his character won’t begin as an antihero. “That’s got to be earned,” he says, “so he starts off as a slave. And he’s pissed off, and people are going to pay. But eventually down the line he’ll become an anti-hero.”

As for the casting of Captain Marvel himself (sorry, DC, but I refuse to call him “Shazam” — that’s the magic word Billy Batson says to turn into Captain Marvel, and I’m sorry Marvel bought the right to use his name as a title before you did, and no amount of retconning will ever change that), Johnson remarked, “We haven’t picked a Shazam yet, and we have been working on the script. Half the scripts [have] already come in. Fantastic, very excited about it. And what I’m really excited about is — because, again, I’ve lived with this character, and this opportunity for almost ten years now, so it’s like, in my DNA! I’m like a little kid, and it’s the opportunity to create his journey, but that journey has to start out properly… I can’t wait to share more casting news by the way.”

Independence Day 2

Charlotte Gainsbourg

One of the first names that comes to mind when one thinks “high-octane thrills”, actress Charlotte Gainsbourg, is joining Liam Hemsworth, Jessie Usher, and Jeff Goldblum in director Roland Emmerich’s long in development Independence Day 2, coming June 24, 2016. The Lars von Trier favorite will no doubt ensure that chaos reigns.
