Movie Morsels: Vin Diesel Calls FURIOUS 7 “Biggest Movie in History”, MALLRATS 2 Casting Update, and More

Today’s Movie Morsels is almost entirely packed with comedy. And you might even say it’s wall-to-wall comedy, if you find Vin Diesel’s latest remarks about Furious 7 as amusing as I do (and, yes, they still make me want to see this film so bad it hurts). We’ve also got the first trailers for the Entourage movie and an offbeat western starring Michael Fassbender, as well as an update on Mallrats 2, and news of a Key & Peele spinoff film. Enjoy!

Furious 7

fast-furious-7-2

So just how good is James Wan’s Furious 7? According to Vin Diesel, it’s good enough to win an Academy Award for Best Picture. Resisting hyperbole, the actor remarked, “Universal is going to have the biggest movie in history with this movie. It will probably win Best Picture at the Oscars, unless the Oscars don’t want to be relevant ever… This will win best picture. There is nothing that will ever come close to the power of this thing.”

Hey, no matter what happens with Furious 7 (and word on the streets is that it is quite good), Diesel’s statements will never come close to those of Mark Wahlberg at last year’s CinemaCon, when he described Transformers as “probably the most iconic franchise in movie history,” and his own Transformers: Age of Extinction as “the biggest movie of 2014.”

Entourage

The boys of HBO’s Entourage are finally back in the first trailer and roll-out poster for their long-awaited spinoff film, directed by Doug Ellin. Adrian Grenier, Kevin Connolly, Jerry Ferrara, Kevin Dillon, and Jeremy Piven (as studio chief Ari Gold) strut their stuff on the big screen on June 5th.

Substitute Teacher

Key & Peele

In other TV spinoff news, Paramount is making Key & Peele fans VERY happy today with the news that the studio bought the Comedy Central show’s spinoff film Substitute Teacher, based on the series’ recurring skit in which Keegan-Michael Key plays Mr. Garvey, a no-nonsense African-American substitute teacher at a white suburban school. Jordan Peele will play a rival teacher. The film will be co-written by Rich Talarico and Alex Rubens (Key & Peele‘s co-producers). In the meantime, the duo’s first joint film venture Keanu — about two friends posing undercover as drug dealers to save their titular kidnapped kitten — begins production this spring.

Slow West

Actor Michael Fassbender explores the wild west while serving as bodyguard to Dawn of the Planet of the Apes‘ Kodi Smit-McPhee in writer-director John Maclean’s comedy adventure Slow West. The film won the World Cinema Dramatic Grand Jury Prize at this year’s Sundance, and debuts in a limited theatrical release and via iTunes on May 15th. Here’s its new trailer.
