Movie Morsels: THE LITTLE MERMAID May Get the Live-Action Treatment

Memorial Day Weekend is almost upon us! And today’s Movie Morsels will help make the wait for your three-day holiday just a little more bearable, with news on an adaptation of Disney’s animated favorite The Little Mermaid, the latest on Rogue One, new Star Trek Beyond posters, a new Finding Dory video, and much more!

The Little Mermaid

The Little Mermaid

Well, after the phenomenal reaction to the trailer for Disney’s upcoming live-action Beauty and the Beast (which garnered more online views than The Force Awakens‘ trailer), you didn’t really think the studio would leave The Little Mermaid untouched, did you? Yes, there’s a good chance that the 1989 musical based on Hans Christian Andersen’s beloved fairy take is the next animated movie the studio will bring to 21st century life. According to Deadline, meetings have begun taking place with producers and Disney has heard a pitch they are currently considering. Last year it was revealed that a non-Disney live-action take on the fairy tale was in development with actress Chloë Moretz. So the big question may soon be which actress should embody the Ariel we best know and love.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

Heads up, Star Wars fans! Rogue One‘s characters are featured prominently alongside those of The Force Awakens in a new poster for this summer’s Star Wars Celebration in London. I’m not usually a big fan of photo-based poster art, but I gotta admit that this design really does look quite spectacular…

Star Trey Beyond

And speaking of poster art, the new Star Trek Beyond character posters also look pretty great. I’m especially digging the Enterprise crew’s new alien ally Jayla (played by Kingsman‘s Sofia Boutella), with her zebra-striped face recalling some of the aliens in the original and immortal 1960s TV series…

Star Trek Beyond

Of course old favorite Bones looks way cool too…

Finding Dory

In honor of Finding Dory‘s release on June 17, Disney has created its own holiday, dubbing June 11 “Speak Like a Whale Day.” The announcement comes in the form of a new video with the actors who voice the film’s whales Destiny and Bailey—Kaitlin Olson and Ty Burrell. What’s amusing to me is the studio putting Olson, best known for her work as a degenerate on the filthiest (albeit funniest) comedy on TV, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, in this most family friendly of franchises. I mean, are kids honestly supposed to recognize her in this video?!

Transformers: The Last Knight

Hot on the heels of Fast 8, Micheal Bay’s Transformers: The Last Knight has officially become the second Hollywood film to shoot in Cuba. The director himself announced the start of production with an Instagram photo which I can only hope indicates we’ll be getting vintage-car-based Transformers this time around…

The Fast and the Furious

Hey while we’re talking Fast 8… The first film in Universal’s auto action thriller franchise, The Fast and the Furious, is returning to theaters on its 15th anniversary, as revealed in the following new video. If you were too young to see Brian and Dom’s first historic adventure in a theater, well, now’s your big chance…
