Movie Morsels: Marvel May Have Finally Found Star-Lord’s Dad

Welcome back to Movie Morsels! To get you through your Wednesday morning, we’ve got the very best fake spoilers from Star Wars: The Force Awakens! But first, a potentially big reveal from Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

Also on tap for today, trailers for Ice Age: Collision Course and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, along with tidbits from X-Men: Apocalypse, a possible Inglourious Basterds spinoff or sequel, and the birth of the Hasbro Cinematic Universe.

Begin!

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

This a potential spoiler for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. If you don’t want to know anything about the film, skip down to the second item!

We know who Star-Lord’s father is! Maybe… Director James Gunn has reportedly set his eyes on screen icon Kurt Russell to portray Peter Quill’s dad in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

The deal hasn’t closed yet, but an offer appears to have been made to Russell. Even if Russell signs on, the identity of his character remains a closely guarded secret. Gunn has previously indicated that Quill’s father won’t be J’son of Spartax, but he will be a major Marvel character who hasn’t appeared in the MCU yet. Let the speculation commence!

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will land in theaters on May 5, 2017.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens

The Force is almost awake, but Nerdist Senior Editor Dan Casey couldn’t resist rounding up Harrison Ford, Daisy Ridley, Oscar Isaac, Gwendoline Christie, Adam Driver, and John Boyega for some juicy (and absolutely fake) Star Wars: The Force Awakens spoilers!

Star Wars: The Force Awakens opens on Friday, December 18.

The Hasbro Cinematic Universe

Everyone in Hollywood wants to emulate Marvel’s Cinematic Universe, and Hasbro is the latest company to reveal its own cinematic universe ambitions. But instead crossing over Transformers with G.I. Joe, Hasbro is uniting the Joes with lesser known properties including M.A.S.K., Rom, Micronauts, and… Visionaries: Knights of the Magical Light?!

M.A.S.K. is basically G.I. Joe meets Transformers, so that’s easy. The rest will be considerably more difficult to work into a cohesive narrative. Nerdist News’ Jessica Chobot has the breakdown of the various Hasbro properties and she also suggests another potential cinematic universe.

Inglourious Basterds 2

Quentin Tarantino still gets a lot of questions about Kill Bill Vol. 3, and he recently mentioned that it still may happen. But that may not be the only sequel that Tarantino has in mind. In a new interview, Tarantino revealed what he has in mind for Inglourious Basterds 2…if it comes together.

inglourious Basterds

“The huge stuff that I took out could make its own movie,” Tarantino told Indiewire. “And it followed a platoon of black troops that were court-martialed and they escape. They were in France; they were going to be hung and in London and their whole thing was to get to Switzerland. And they ended up getting into an adventure and they meet the Basterds, so I ended up taking all that out.”

Sounds intriguing!

X-Men: Apocalypse

This week, Oscar Isaac gets to be one of the heroes in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. But next spring, Isaac will step into the title role of X-Men: Apocalypse as one of the greatest adversaries to ever face Marvel’s mutant heroes. There’s already been some pushback from fans over Apocalypse’s appearance and powers in this movie, but Isaac appears to be comfortable with the film’s take on his character.

“When someone says Apocalypse without referring a comic book, it’s a very general question,” said Isaac during an interview with Black Film. “They may want to state which is their Apocalypse first. He’s definitely not going to be everyone’s favorite version of Apocalypse, but he’s my favorite version of Apocalypse.”

X-Men: Apocalypse will open on May 27, 2016.

Ice Age: Collision Course

The first trailer for the fifth Ice Age movie has arrived, and it sends Scrat into space for a pretty hilarious sequence that offers up a completely unscientific origin for the layout of our solar system.

The Ice Age: Collision Course trailer actually works well as a stand alone short, with cameo appearances by Manny (Ray Romano), Diego (Denis Leary), and Sid (John Leguizamo).

Scrat’s space adventure is apparently a real part of the movie that sets off a potential extinction level event, forcing Manny, Diego, and Sid to abandon their home. Ice Age: Collision Course hits theaters everywhere on July 22, 2016.

Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them

To close out today’s Movie Morsels, we’ve got the first teaser trailer for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, the spinoff/prequel movie from the beloved Harry Potter novels…as written by J.K. Rowling herself!

The teaser gives us our first glimpse of the legendary wizard explorer, Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne); his companion, Porpetina Goldstein (Katherine Waterston); and the enigmatic Graves (Colin Farrell). Also, Hedwig’s theme is reprised in a nice nod to the Harry Potter films.

Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them will be released on November 18, 2016.
