Movie Morsels: JUSTICE LEAGUE May Use Doomsday’s Comic Book Mythology

DC’s Superman-slaying Doomsday could be a little bit more than what he seems, as far a the latest word on Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League has us believing. Also in today’s Movie Morsels, we’ve got new photos from Deadpool, and new trailers for Triple 9, The Finest Hours, and The Witch. Enjoy!

Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice

Doomsday

Although we’ve heard that Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice will see its Doomsday created in a lab by Lex Luthor out of General Zod’s corpse, director Zack Snyder hints that the villain’s origin won’t be as simple as that, and may in fact somehow utilize the DC Universe mythology in the Justice League movie…

Speaking about the Justice League movie, Snyder tells The Daily Beast, “Well, you have Doomsday, right? He doesn’t just crawl out of the ground. He has his own mythology, right? So that has to be explored…”

Of course, this leads to the question, “What mythology?” since there isn’t much more to Doomsday beyond the fact that he was created on Krypton and beats the crap out of Superman. Then again, Snyder has admitted before that he was never much of a fan of superhero comics, so it stands to reason he wouldn’t know that the character doesn’t have a huge backstory.

The filmmaker adds that, “Though I’m super excited and happy and fulfilled by the conflict of Batman and Superman, there’s also a bigger world to start to think about.”

Snyder also recently teased that “there will be a bigger enemy to fight in Justice League.” Which leads us to wonder who it could be besides Doomsday—Darkseid perhaps? Hmmm…

In other Batman v Superman news, there’s a new Brazilian trailer for the film, offering even more pyrotechnics than the previous footage…

Triple 9

Triple 9

I had the chance to interview Casey Affleck yesterday about his new movie The Finest Hours, and the actor shared a few choice words about his upcoming heist/crime thriller Triple 9. Words I’ll share soon when the interview lands on Nerdist. In the meantime, you can check out the film’s latest trailer on Apple.com. Directed by John Hillcoat, Triple 9 boasts what’s sure to be one of the most impressive casts of the year, co-starring Chiwetel Ejiofor, Anthony Mackie, Aaron Paul, Norman Reedus, Woody Harrelson, Kate Winslet, Clifton Collins, Jr., Michael K. Williams, Teresa Palmer and Gal Gadot. The film opens on February 26th.

The Finest Hours

Hey, speaking of The Finest Hours, there’s a brand-new promo for the Disney drama, based on the 1952 true story of the largest boat rescue in U.S. Coast Guard history, in which two oil tankers were ripped apart in a nor’easter. Chris Pine co-stars in the Craig Gillespie-helmed picture, which lands on January 29th.

The Witch

Finally today… We have a brand spanking new trailer for the supposedly terrifying new indie horror film The Witch, which many are calling the best chiller of 2016. Yeah, I know, the year is still pretty young. In any case, The Witch concerns a Puritan family in 17th century New England. It arrives on February 19th…
