Movie Morsels: J.J. Abrams Promises Few Lens Flares in THE FORCE AWAKENS

Sure, it’s great that there’s another movie featuring Han Solo, Leia Organa, and Luke Skywalker coming our way next month. But you know what’s just as great? That Star Wars: The Force Awakens will have a minimal amount of the J.J. Abrams trademark lens flare. Also in today’s Movie Morsels, we have a new TV spot for the latest Star Wars chapter, the latest on Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, a new poster for The Hateful Eight, and more!

Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Yes, we live in a world where a photographic technique, or the lack thereof, is headline news. But most of us would agree that director J.J. Abrams’ penchant for lens flares was a tad too overt in his Star Trek films. So kudos to Abrams’ wife for telling him to tone it down as sails on his maiden voyage into the Star Wars universe.

In his “Celebrity Nerd Off” with Stephen Colbert this weekend, the filmmaker remarked that, “There was one scene where [Star Trek Into Darkness‘] Alice Eve was so obliterated by a lens flare that I was showing the scene to my wife, Katie, and she was like, ‘OK You know what? Enough. I can’t see what this scene is about. Who is standing there?… I can’t see her.'”

He went on to say that, “As you’ll see in the Star Wars movie, I’ve allowed lens flares to take a very back seat. There are a couple [moments] where you have to have them.”

This time around, when asked by his crew if he wanted a lens flare, Abrams replied, “This is not the movie; these are not the flares you’re looking for.”

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

When asked what the tone or mood of the J.K. Rowling adaptation Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them will be like, producer David Heyman says that even though it’s directed by David Yates, its comparable to Mike Newell’s Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

“[Fantastic Beasts has] got the charm of the fourth,” Heyman remarked. “It’s like the fourth. Mike talked about the fourth as being like an Indian musical — and it’s not that, but it’s got the humor of of that film. It has the romantic comedy, that fish-out-of-water humor, that very human, natural character comedy. And now David is always looking for truthful, human moments, it’s never just a gag, he’s grounding [the storytelling moments] in a reality. [Beasts] is very funny, it’s got a big heart, and there’s darkness too.”

The Hateful Eight

Is there anything more hateful than a man who turns his back on you? Methinks not. Which is why the latest poster for Quentin Tarantino’s upcoming western The Hateful Eight is more hateful than ever!

Central Intelligence

While Kevin Hart’s brand of humor is hit or miss for me, I’ll watch Dwayne Johnson in pretty much anything. So count me in for Central Intelligence, in which the two stars team up for a bit of mismatched espionage. Here’s the first official teaser trailer:

The Boss

Speaking of stars I’ll watch in anything: after Spy, Melissa McCarthy can do no wrong in my book. And it looks like the actress has something to tide us over until her Ghostbusters comes to save the world next summer. Here’s the trailer for The Boss:
