Movie Morsels: GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY 2 and DEADPOOL Updates, MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 5’s New Release Date

Will Lee Pace be in Guardians of the Galaxy 2? Will Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool deliver the goods for fans still burned out by the character’s turn in X-Men Origins: Wolverine? How many clips from Matthew Vaughn’s Kingsman: The Secret Service can you stand to watch before it hits theaters? All this, plus info on a couple of films that are not based on comic books in today’s Movie Morsels!

Deadpool

Deadpool

Deadpool star Ryan Reyolds is offering some comforting words for the many fans who’ve waited far too long for a movie devoted to the Merc with a Mouth: “It’s been a long time, but it’s happening the right way, and that’s all that matters. The budget isn’t what we all hoped it would be, this is actually the suit (pointing to his red and black shirt). We don’t have the money that most superhero movies do, but that’s great, actually. You know, necessity’s the mother of invention and that’s why we get to make the movie we want to make.”

Regarding the difference between Deadpool and his last superhero film, Green Lantern, Reynolds remarks, “You gotta just have faith in the people you’re working with, and faith in the prep, and that’s all I’m doing. On this one, the prep’s been eleven years. So, you know, you’d like to think that you’re putting your best foot forward, but we’ll see.”

We shall indeed see — when Deadpool opens on February 12, 2016.

Guardians of the Galaxy 2

Guardians of the Galaxy

Despite the actor’s recent remarks that he’d love to be in Guardians of the Galaxy 2, Lee Pace’s Ronan will not be featured in the sequel to last year’s blockbuster Marvel epic. At least according to director James Gunn on his recent live Facebook commentary for the film. Gunn is quick to add that Pace could appear in another film, so perhaps we’ll get that flashback to Ronan’s misunderstood emo teen years that we’re all longing for.

Mission Impossible 5

Cruise

Tom Cruise’s Edge of Tomorrow was one of last summer’s film highlights, though it didn’t perform all that well at the box office. But will Cruise’s next mission — since he has chosen to accept it — win a bigger audience when it too rolls out during the dog days? Paramount must think so, because the studio has just announced that Mission Impossible 5 will open on July 31st — a whopping five months earlier than its planned release date. This time around, Christopher McQuarrie is in the director’s chair. And the new release date has MI5 debuting the same day as Jake Gyllenhaal’s Southpaw, the Point Break remake, and Ryan Reynolds’ Selfless.

Kingsman: The Secret Service

Admit it — you know want to watch yet another clip from Matthew Vaughn’s Kingsman: The Secret Service, don’t you? Well, you’re in luck, mate, because we’ve got one for you right now. In which Colin Firth’s titular secret agent meets his arch-enemy, Samuel Jackson’s Richard Valentine, for the very first time. And the film opens on February 13th, Valentine’s Day weekend? Now how’s that for synergy?!

Dodge and Twist

Edgar Wright has just agreed to do a complete rewrite of Dodge and Twist, a steampunk action film set twenty years after the events of Oliver Twist, in which little orphaned Oliver is a grown-up police office out to stop the Artful Dodger from stealing the crown jewels of England. Based on an idea by Ahmet Zappa, who will also produce, the film is looking for its director and leads, with Andrew Garfield and Eddie Redmayne apparently the current favorites for the roles of Dodger and Oliver. Wright, however, will not direct, since he’s prepping his own “rock-and-roll car chase film” Baby Driver and YA adaptation Grasshopper Jungle.
