Movie Morsels: Grant Morrison’s DEADPOOL Mutant, Fresh TOMORROWLAND Footage, Disney Sets Live-Action MULAN

Another day, another Deadpool announcement… But that’s the way we like here at Movie Morsels! We’re also digging the latest Tomorrowland TV spot (seriously, this film is rapidly approaching Age of Ultron territory as far as May releases I’m anticipating), news of a live-action Mulan from Disney (don’t snicker, I’ll tell you why it could be good), word on Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow’s next project, and a clip from Jonah Hill and James Franco’s decidely unfunny True Story.

Deadpool

Deadpool

Great news, Grant Morrison fans! Your hero’s weirdness is finally reaching the big screen. The Morrison-created telepathic precog mutant with the very Morrison-like name of Negasonic Teenage Warhead (who first appeared in 2001’s New X-Men #115, illustrated by Frank Quitely) will appear in director Tim Miller’s Deadpool. She’ll be played by newcomer Brianna Hildebrand (pictured above). Deadpool — starring Ryan Reynolds, Morena Baccarin, Gina Carano, and T.J. Miller — arrives on February 12, 2016.

Tomorrowland

Brad Bird’s Tomorrowland is looking better and better all the time. The latest TV spot for the film offers some new footage to further whet our appetites. Although it focuses on Tomorrowland‘s “chosen one” storyline (in which Britt Robertson’s character holds the key to saving the future), I’ve heard from insiders that Damon Lindelof’s script won’t present another cliched messiah story. So don’t start having Phantom Menace flashbacks just yet. Tomorrowland, co-starring George Clooney and Hugh Laurie, will be here on May 22nd.

Mulan

Mulan

If you’re not a fan of Disney’s current wave of live-action adaptations of its animated hits, well, sorry folks, you’re just SOL. The studio has just announced plans for Mulan, based on the 1998 film about the famed Chinese folk heroine who disguises herself as a man in order to defend her home country from invaders. Lauren Hynek and Elizabeth Martin are scripting, while the director and release date are TBA. Given Mulan’s origins in history and folklore, as opposed to the pure fantasy on which Alice in Wonderland, Maleficent, Cinderella, and the upcoming Beauty and the Beast are based, there’s actually pretty fertile ground here for an action-packed non-musical historical epic, should Disney choose to go in that direction. Ah, who am I kidding… A singing CGI dragon is all but insured.

True Story

We have the first clip from James Franco and Jonah Hill’s True Story, courtesy of Fox Searchlight. Based on the real-life tale of Michael Finkel (Hill) and Christian Longo (Franco), who took on the identity of the New York Times journalist after killing his entire family. The new clip features the two gentlemen’s first meeting. True Story, directed by first-time feature helmer Rupert Goold and based on Finkel’s 2006 memoir True Story: Murder, Memoir, Mea Culpa, debuts on April 17th.

Book of Henry

Colin Trevorrow

Colin Trevorrow’s Jurassic World isn’t out until June 12th, but the director already has two more films lined up — the previously announced sci-fi thriller Intelligent Life and now Book of Henry, which he will start shooting in September. What’s it about? No one’s saying yet, but it has an original screenplay from acclaimed novelist Gregg Hurwitz, so it’s at least got a good pedigree. Says Trevorrow, “Book Of Henry is a remarkable piece of screenwriting that has stuck with me for years. I feel very fortunate to be able to tell this story. It is a true original.”
