Deadpool

While issue #250 of the Deadpool comic is said to feature the death of Marvel’s Merc with a Mouth, Deadpool film star Ryan Reynolds assures us that the antihero is very much alive and well. He’s just taking a bathroom break.

Director Tim Miller’s Deadpool will be here on February 12, 2016.

Suicide Squad

Speaking of Twitter photos… Suicide Squad director David Ayer has just released the first image of his assembled cast, taken at their script read-through. Though newly minted Jared Leto and Scott Eastwood are absent, newcomers Ike Barinholtz (Neighbors) and Adam Beach (Flags of Our Fathers) are revealed. Their roles are TBA. The Suicide Squad grudgingly accept their first mission on August 5, 2016.

Gremlins

Gremlins

Okay, don’t kill the messenger… Warner Bros. has recruited Carl Ellsworth (who scripted Disturbia, the Last House on the Left remake, and the upcoming Goosebumps film) to write a remake of Joe Dante’s 1984 classic Gremlins. One rumor is that the original film’s screenwriter Chris Columbus could direct.

Ex Machina

Here’s an exclusive TV spot from Alex Garland’s much ballyhooed artificial-intelligence thriller Ex Machina, starring Domhnall Gleeson and Oscar Isaac, and Alicia Vikander as the seductive android that comes between them. The film arrives on April 10th.

Me and Earl and the Dying Girl

The Winner of the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival hits theaters for all the world to see on June 12th, and its trailer is finally online. Thomas Mann and Olivia Cook star in this reportedly very funny and moving tale from director Alfonso Gomez-Rejon and writer Jesse Andrews, adapting his 2012 novel of a high school outsider who befriends a young woman with cancer.

It Follows 2

It Follows

With It Follows performing far beyond all expectations, discussions are already underway about a sequel to the low-budget horror hit about a sexually transmitted demon. Tom Quinn, co-president of distributor Radius-TWC, has an idea for a follow-up. “Flip the title,” he says. “There’s so much you could do.” Could a sequel find its heroes investigating the sexual histories of their partners in order to learn the origins of the creature haunting them? Director David Robert Mitchell tells Vulture, “I have a lot of different kinds of projects in many different genres, so I don’t know that a sequel would be the next thing that I would do, but I’m certainly open to it… I just kinda want to see how things play out.” But star Maika Monroe comments, “I don’t know where the story would go, but I would love to work with David, the director, again, because I think he’s incredible, and what he created here was something else… We’ll see how it does. Maybe! Maybe!”

Grand Theft Auto

Daniel Radcliffe

No, it’s not a film adaptation of the hit video game series, but it’s the next best thing — a biopic about Grand Theft Auto creator and Rockstar Games co-founder Sam Houser, focusing on his battle with Miami lawyer Jack Thompson, who sought to ban violence from GTA and the gaming industry. Daniel Radcliffe is in discussions to star. Scripted by James Wood and based on author David Kushner’s Jacked: The Outlaw Story of Grand Theft Auto, the film starts production on April 20 under British TV director Owen Harris for BBC Films.

The Odyssey

Francis Lawrence

Lionsgate is understandably pleased as punch with director Francis Lawrence’s last two blockbuster Hunger Games films, as well as the upcoming final installment in the saga, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 2. The studio has signed the filmmaker — as well as a couple of his Hunger Games honchos; producer Nina Jacobson and screenwriter Peter Craig — to move from the far future to the distant past and develop an adaptation of Homer’s 8th century epic The Odyssey.

True Story

Star Wars spinoff film star Felicity Jones conspires with reporter Jonah Hill in a new clip from True Story, based on the real-life tale of Michael Finkel (Hill) and Christian Longo (James Franco), who took on the identity of a New York Times journalist after killing his entire family. True Story is directed by first-time helmer Rupert Goold, and based on Finkel’s 2006 memoir True Story: Murder, Memoir, Mea Culpa. The film is out on April 17th.
