Welcome back to Movie Morsels! To kickoff your Thursday morning movie news, today’s column is looking at the first photos from The Legend of Tarzan, the return of a very familiar face for Mission: Impossible 6, and the first look at Billie Lourd’s character in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

There’s also some Marvel news ahead, as Ant-Man and the Wasp gets its writing team, and Jeremy Renner shows off some new Captain America: Civil War costumes. while Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows and Steven Spielberg’s The BFG get teaser trailers!

Movie Morsels starts now!

The Legend of Tarzan

It’s been nearly 18 years since the last live-action theatrically released Tarzan movie, but Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Lord of the Jungle is poised for a big comeback next year. Warner Bros. has released the first two photos from The Legend of Tarzan, starring former True Blood standout Alexander Skarsgård in the title role, and Margot Robbie as Jane Porter, Tarzan’s first love.

The first poster for The Legend of Tarzan was also released, with Tarzan appearing side-by-side with one of the apes that raised him.

The Legend of Tarzan has a really strong supporting cast that includes Christoph Waltz, Djimon Hounsou, John Hurt, and Samuel L. Jackson. On July 1, 2016, we’ll know if movie fans are ready to embrace The Legend of Tarzan and reinvigorate the franchise.

Mission: Impossible 6

Tom Cruise is synonymous with the Mission: Impossible films, but Rebecca Ferguson basically stole Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation from Cruise thanks to her compelling turn as MI6 agent Ilsa Faust. Now Ferguson will be the first Mission: Impossible leading lady to return for a major role in the sequel.

There’s currently no release date for Mission: Impossible 6, but Christopher McQuarrie is confirmed as the writer and director, and it may begin production as soon as next summer.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens

With the Expanded Universe now in the dustpan of Star Wars history, it’s currently unclear if Princess General Leia has any children in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Carrie Fisher’s real-life daughter, Billie Lourd (Scream Queens) has a role in The Force Awakens, but not as the daughter of her mother’s character. Frankly, we don’t really know who she’s playing, but People Magazine has unveiled two new photos of Lourd in costume.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens will crush the box office records when it comes out on Friday, December 18. Hopefully we’ll know more about Lourd’s character after the movie.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows

Later today, Paramount Pictures is debuting the first full trailer from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, the follow-up to the Michael Bay produced TMNT reboot film from 2014. But leave it to Arrow star Stephen Amell to post the first footage from the film. He’s joining the franchise as the Turtles’ other human ally, the vigilante known as Casey Jones.

In that brief clip, the Turtle van and Amell’s Casey Jones are briefly glimpsed. Tyler Perry also makes his debut in the video as Baxter Stockman, a proverbial (and potentially a literal) fly in the ointment for the Turtles. Paramount also released “Wanted” posters for Rocksteady (WWE Champion Sheamus) and Bebop (Gary Anthony Williams), two of the film’s incoming villains. They will probably look…different by the end of the movie.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows is set for release on June 3, 2016.

Captain America: Civil War

Marvel’s next film is just a few months away, but there’s still a lot of things to tease from Captain America: Civil War. Jeremy Renner posted an on-set photo of himself in costume as Hawkeye next to Elizabeth Olsen as the Scarlet Witch.

Both Hawkeye and the Scarlet Witch are wearing slightly different costumes in this film, but this is the best glimpse that we’ve gotten of the new costumes so far.

Captain America: Civil War will be released on May 6, 2016.

Ant-Man and the Wasp

The sequel to Ant-Man is still three years away, but Marvel Studios has locked down the writing team for Ant-Man and the Wasp. Andrew Barrer and Gabriel Ferrari worked on the first Ant-Man as uncredited rewriters. But for the second movie, Barrer and Ferrari will work with Paul Rudd on the script. Adam McKay will also contribute to the story, but the actual script will be written by Barrer, Ferrari, and Rudd.

Ant-Man and the Wasp

Ant-Man and the Wasp will be released on July 6, 2018.

The BFG

Steven Spielberg is directing Disney’s adaptation of Roald Dahl’s The BFG. That’s “the Big Friendly Giant,” for those of you who haven’t read Dahl’s original novel. The title character is played by Mark Rylance, but most of the story takes place from the perspective of Sophie (Ruby Barnhill), a young orphan girl who encounters the BFG and gets drawn into his world.

The first teaser trailer for The BFG has arrived, and it depicts part of Sophie’s first meeting with the BFG after she looks out the window at exactly the wrong time.

Disney will release The BFG on July 1, 2016.
