fast-furious-7-2

A tearful Vin Diesel took the stage at this year’s CinemaCon yesterday to announce that the eighth Fast & Furious film, and the first without his late friend and co-star Paul Walker, will debut on April 14th, 2017. A number of release dates for upcoming Universal films were also revealed during Universal Studios’ presentation. First up, the two sequels to Fifty Shades of Grey, both of which will arrive on Valentine’s Day weekend (because apparently that’s how lovers roll these days.). Fifty Shades Darker will land on February 10, 2017, while Fifty Shades Freed will take us to the final level of sadomasochistic pleasure on February 9, 2018. Legendary’s Warcraft moves from March 11, 2016 to Friday, June 10, 2016. Tom Cruise and Doug Liman’s follow-up to Edge of Tomorrow, Mena, comes on January 6, 2017. The new Mummy moves from June 24, 2016 to Friday, March 24, 2017. Pacific Rim 2 moves from April 7, 2017, to Friday, August 4, 2017. The Visit

Also unveiled during yesterday’s Universal presentation at CinemaCon was the trailer for writer-director M. Night Shyamalan and horror mogul Jason Blum’s first collaboration, The Visit. The film tells the story of a brother and sister who go to their grandparents’ home and find them to be just a little bit… scary. Kathryn Hahn stars in the September 11th release. The film’s poster offers Grandma’s three ominous rules.

Area 51

Oren Peli has gone from indie horror helmer to mainstream movie producer in just a few short years. After directing the microbudgeted blockbuster Paranormal Activity, he moved onto collaborating on such fright films as the hit Insidious franchise. But the filmmaker returns to the directing ring with his next movie, Area 51, the trailer for which is now available online. The long-awaited found-footage close-encounter chiller debuts Friday, May 15th in limited release at Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas and runs through Sunday, May 17th, before expanding nationwide. Tickets go on sale online and at Alamo Drafthouse theaters on Monday, May 11th. Here’s the film’s trailer from Paramount Insurge.

Black Mass

Johnny Depp goes full Pesci in the trailer for Black Mass, the crime thriller about real-life Boston gangster Whitey Bulger, in which Depp looks about as unattractive as we’ve ever seen him in a film. Co-starring Joel Edgerton, Benedict Cumberbatch, Kevin Bacon, Dakota Johnson, Jesse Plemons, Corey Stoll, Rory Cochrane, Sienna Miller and Adam Scott, director Scott Cooper’s Black Mass debuts on September 18th.
