Movie Morsels: Dwayne Johnson Soars into ALPHA SQUAD SEVEN, THE HATEFUL EIGHT Character Portraits, and More

Happy Monday, folks. Let’s get that work week started with another rootin-tootin, rip-roaring edition of Movie Morsels. Action and comedy are on today’s schedule, with a character photos for each member of the title team in Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight. As well as news on Dwayne Johnson’s next and most ambitious-sounding project yet, and the latest TV spot for his upcoming San Andreas. Plus, two new featurettes for Tomorrowland, a new poster for the Vacation reboot/continuation, and a clip from the upcoming espionage comedy Spy, starring Melissa McCarthy and Jude Law.

The Hateful Eight

Last week we showed you Entertainment Weekly‘s latest cover, devoted to Quentin Tarantino upcoming western The Hateful Eight (debuting this fall). EW is now sharing portrait photos from this issue, featuring stars Samuel L. Jackson as Major Marquis Warren (aka “The Bounty Hunter”), Kurt Russell as John Ruth (aka “The Hangman”), Jennifer Jason Leigh as Daisy Domergue (aka “The Prisoner”), Walton Goggins as Chris Mannix (aka “The Sheriff”), Demián Bichir as Bob (aka “The Mexican”), Tim Roth as Oswaldo Mobray (aka “The Little Man”), Michael Madsen as Joe Gage (aka “The Cow Puncher”), and Bruce Dern as General Sanford Smithers (aka “The Confederate”). Check ’em out below in all their scruffy frontier glory.

Alpha Squad Seven

Dwayne Johnson

Dwayne Johnson has won the WWF/E Championship eight times, journeyed to the center of the earth, and, as Black Adam, is about to go toe-to-toe with Captain Marvel himself. So it makes sense that the Rock is now poised to conquer the only frontier he hasn’t yet — the final one. Get ready for Alpha Squad Seven, a DreamWorks “sci-fi action comedy” in which Johnson will anchor “a four-quadrant action-comedy adventure set in space. Independence Day, Armageddon and Guardians of the Galaxy are some of the watchwords.” The film is also meant to “launch a potential franchise.”

San Andreas

For more Rock-y goodness, here’s the latest TV spot for San Andreas, which finds the charismatic star playing a rescue helicopter pilot on a mission to save his daughter when an earthquake hits the titular fault. Directed by Brad Peyton and co-starring Carla Gugino, Alexandra Daddario, Ioan Gruffudd, Archie Panjabi, Hugo Johnstone-Burt, Art Parkinson, and Paul Giamatti, San Andreas opens (sorry) in 3D and 2D on May 29th.

Tomorrowland

Disney has released two new featurettes — one that answers the question “What is Tomorrowland?” and another that examines the “Citizens of Tomorrowland”. Director Brad Bird and screenwriter Damon Lindelof’s science-fiction epic, starring George Clooney and Britt Robertson and based on the Disney theme park attraction, opens on May 22nd.

Vacation

Last week saw the release of the red-band trailer for the new Vacation starring Ed Helms and Christina Applegate and Chris Hemsworth as a man who’s understandably VERY proud of his body. Here it is if you haven’t seen it yet…

Now we’ve got the film’s official poster, featuring Helms (who plays the original Vacation‘s Rusty Griswold, now all grown up with a family of his own) displaying his love for Wally World. It’s a love that will most likely lead his family to certain doom. But hey, maybe they’ll wind up having a great time? Here’s hoping we can say the same. Vacation opens on July 29th.

Spy

Having seen Bridesmaids director Paul Feig’s Spy at last month’s CinemaCon in Las Vegas, I can attest that it’s a hilarious take on the espionage genre as well a perfect vehicle for star Melissa McCarthy’s considerable comedic talents. McCarthy plays a CIA analyst who enters the field when her boss, a suave agent played by Jude Law, is kidnapped. Co-starring Jason Statham, Rose Byrne, Bobby Cannavale, Allison Janney, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, and Miranda Hart, Spy arrives on June 5th. Here’s a new clip from the film in which the relationship between McCarthy and Law’s characters is established…
