Star Wars: The Force Awakens

In a new Disney shareholders report, studio CEO Bob Iger has unveiled the release plans for the two chapters in the Star Wars saga that will follow Episode VII: The Force Awakens. Here’s Iger’s statement:

“As one of the few people allowed to visit the set during filming….and one of the fewer who’s seen most of the footage…I can assure the millions of Star Wars fans who have spent the last decade hoping for a new movie this one will be worth the wait. And it’s only the beginning of a new era of exceptional Star Wars storytelling; next year we’ll release our first standalone movie based on these characters, followed by Star Wars: Episode VIII in 2017, and we’ll finish this trilogy with Episode IX in 2019.”

Yup, we’ve only got a two year wait between the chapters of this trilogy. It’s worth noting that Iger’s choice of the words “this trilogy” implies that there could be more trilogies to come. And “these characters” indicates that the new characters introduced in The Force Awakens could appear in next year’s standalone movie. Though we haven’t seen what Disney can do with a Star Wars movie just yet, one thing’s for sure — the Mouse is gonna have a lot of chances to get it right in the near future.

Ant-Man

We saw S.H.I.E.L.D.’s Peggy Carter in Captain America: The Winter Soldier and we’ve heard we may see her yet again in Avengers: Age of Ultron, but did you know the two-fisted agent and the organization she co-founded also have a connection to Ant-Man? Preview art from Marvel’s two-issue prequel comic — written by Will Corona Pilgrim, illustrated by Miguel Sepulveda, and titled Marvel’s Ant-Man Prelude — reveal a connection between Agent Carter and Michael Douglas’ Hank Pym, the original Ant-Man who mentors Paul Rudd’s Scott Lang in the Peyton Reed-directed film. Ant-Man the film — co-starring Evangeline Lilly — arrives on July 17th.

Jurassic World

Universal has updated its Jurassic World website with info and teaser images of the film’s brand-spanking-new dinosaur: the Indominus Rex. Toothier than Jurassic Park‘s beloved T-Rex, the dino is described thusly:

“We set out to make Indominus the most fearsome dinosaur ever to be displayed at Jurassic World. The genetic engineers at our Hammond Creation Lab have more than delivered…At first glance, Indominus most closely resembles a T. Rex. But its distinctive head ornamentation and ultra-tough bony osteoderms can be traced from Theropods known as Abeliosaurs. Indominus’ horns have been placed above the eye orbit through genetic material hybridized from Carnotaurus, Majungasaurus, Rugops and Giganotosaurus. Fearsome indeed…..Indominus’ roar is estimated to reach 140-160db—the same as a 747 taking off and landing. And it can reach speeds of 30 MPH while confined to its enclosure. Come experience Indominus Rex for yourself beginning this summer. If you dare.”

Divergent

Joining the list of movies promoted with ads via Sunday’s Super Bowl is Summit Entertainment’s Insurgent, the sequel to last year’s Divergent, directed by Robert Schwentke and due out on March 20th. MTV unveiled a preview clip yesterday, featuring stars Shailene Woodley and Kate Winslet, which you can view right now.

Pete’s Dragon

Karl Urban is like a fine Louisiana hot sauce, isn’t he? He just makes everything better. So kudos to Disney for smartly recruiting the Star Trek and Dredd star to replace the departing Michael C. Hall in the studio’s remake of its 1977 musical fantasy Pete’s Dragon. Urban will join Robert Redford and Bryce Dallas Howard in the David Lowery-directed film, which starts production soon in New Zealand.
