Captain America: Civil War
Remember how Captain America: The Winter Soldier was marketed in part as a political thriller? In the latest issue of Empire, the Russo Brothers name the genre with which their new Captain America: Civil War shares its DNA…
“The consequences of Civil War,” says Joe Russo, “will have an even more significant impact [than The Winter Soldier]. In Civil War, we’re going to change the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s psychology, and it’s an extreme shift… Winter Soldier was a political thriller; this is a psychological thriller.”
Hmmm… Then Anthony Russo weighs in, admitting the film has a “very dramatic ending that will be controversial for a lot of people.”

In the comic books, Civil War is capped by the Death of Captain America storyline, in which see Bucky take up the shield when Steve is assassinated. We may be inclined to believe this is the course the film will take, considering the fact that Chris Evans has only one film left on his Marvel contract. Many are speculating his last appearance will be in the Russos’ Infinity War Part 2, which could see Cap return from the grave.
The Light Between the Oceans
Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander are my favorite new nerd power couple, seeing as how they’ve each starred in several recent genre film favorites. Now the real-life partners bring their relationship to the screen in the drama The Light Between Oceans. The film revolves around a pair of lighthouse keepers who raise an abandoned baby who has washed ashore in a rowboat. Here’s the film’s new trailer…
The Thomas Crown Affair
Michael B. Jordan got down and dirty for the masterful Creed. But the star is in talks to get smooth and suave as a master criminal in a new remake of The Thomas Crown Affair. The original 1968 heist thriller starred Steve McQueen, while the 1999 remake featured Pierce Brosnan.
Gods of Egypt

Paramount has at long last set a release date for its much anticipated extreme sports/spy saga xXx: The Return of Xander Cage. Vin Diesel will make his return to the franchise on January 20, 2017. Ruby Rose, Donnie Yen, Toni Collette, Tony Jaa, Nina Dobrev, and Samuel L. Jackson co-star.
The Birth of a Nation
Finally today… Fox has set a release date for the much acclaimed Birth of a Nation, which made its debut at this year’s Sundance Film Festival: October 7, 2016, a date that tells us the studio is already thinking “Oscars.” A 21st century response to silent pioneer D.W. Griffith’s racist-as-hell movie of the same name, the new Nation tells the story of Nat Turner and the rebellion he led in the antebellum South. The film stars Nate Parker (who also writes and directs), Armie Hammer, Penelope Ann Miller, and Jackie Earle Haley.
