Avengers 3 and 4

Yesterday was a momentous day for the Marvel Cinematic Universe — not only is there a juicy bit of Tony Stark-related news, but there’s a rumor floating around that Captain America: The Winter Soldier directors Joe and Anthony Russo may be in line to inherit the job of directing Avengers from Joss Whedon. The rumor first appeared on Badass Digest:

“How closely will Captain America 3 tie in with Avengers 3? I’ve been told that the Russo Brothers are in talks to direct Avengers 3 and possibly 4. Sources tell me that they’re the favorites of Marvel right now and that they are the guys Kevin Feige want to pick up the mantle from Joss Whedon.”

Well, if anyone has to grab the baton from Whedon, I’m glad its the guys who made one of my favorite. [Slashfilm]

Captain America 3

Arguably the biggest story of yesterday came towards the end of the day’s news cycle: Robert Downey Jr. is joining Captain America 3 in a major way. Not only will he be Captain America’s main adversary, but it’ll be the start of Civil War, one of the most anticipated and frequently rumored Marvel Comics storylines that will have far-reaching ramifications on the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

Ever since it was announced that Gal Gadot would be playing the most famous female superhero of them all, Wonder Woman, in Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, fans have been wondering what version of the iconic Amazon they would use. Well wonder no more because producer Charles Roven, while speaking at the Loyola Marymount School of Film and TV, revealed that Wonder Woman will indeed be a goddess in the film, namely a demigod, and her father is none other than Zeus, the Greek God of Thunder and Pretending to be a Goose. Hippolyta will still be Diana’s mother, but as for whether or not we’ll still see her kill Ares to become the new God of War is another story entirely. Star Wars: Episode VII

While we’ve already grown accustomed to the idea of J.J. Abrams and his adorable black-rimmed glasses directing Star Wars: Episode VII, it’s hard not to what wonder what might have been. Recently, Brad Bird revealed in an interview that he was offered the Star Wars directing job, but he passed it up in favor of Tomorrowland.

“For a moment there I thought it would work out to do this and go right into it, and it wouldn’t work. There was no way to make that schedule and give this film the attention it deserved.  I know it’s going to be terrific and everything, but I’m really happy to do this film. It’s rare to do a film of size that’s original.”

That’s okay, Brad. I’d rather have you directing Tomorrowland and J.J. directing Star Wars anyway. That way, I get to watch both movies in a form that I’m totally okay with seeing. [MTV]

Terminator: Genisys

While many longtime Terminator fans, myself included, have been staring in horror at the word “Genisys” hanging off of the word “Terminator” like a vestigial tail, the actors have begun sounding off on what to expect from Alan Ball’s forthcoming Terminator: Genisys. Actor Jai Courtney, who will be playing Kyle Reese, revealed that it’s not a sequel or a reboot, but more a reset for the franchise:

““I think it’s going to be really cool what they’ve done with it.  It’s curious, I’ve been thinking a lot about how we actually frame—people want to know if it’s a sequel or a reboot.  A word that kind of came to me is that it’s more of a ‘reset.’  That’s the awesome thing about when you play with time travel.  We can kind of get away with, you know, maybe we’re introduced to a world that audiences know but circumstances can change and that shifts the course of everything.”

Yeah, yeah, the old time travel excuse. Although, to be fair, it worked rather well for the J.J. Abrams-directed Star Trek films, so I’m not going to think about it too hard. Even though you should definitely watch Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgement Day, Courtney says you won’t need to have seen them in order to appreciate, ugh, Genisys:

“I don’t think it’s either or.  I think it’s, if they wanted to [watch the first two films] they could but I don’t think that if they hadn’t they’ll see our film and be completely lost.”

Like it or not, with sequels slated for 2017 and 2018, this Terminator will most definitely be back. [Collider]

Ghostbusters 3

Bustin’ has made us feel good 30 years and counting now, so it’s only natural that there’d be a third Ghostbusters film eventually. Recently, it was announced that Paul Feig would be directing Ghostbusters 3 based on a script by Kattie Dippold (The Heat) that features an all-female Ghostbusters team. Now that the cat ghost is out of the trap, the campaigning has begun and someone with extensive experience battling the supernatural wants in on the fun: Gillian Anderson.

In a recent reddit AMA, Anderson said, “OH MY GOD, I just looked it up online. Paul Feig, cast me now! Start a Twitter petition! I’m free!!!!! I’m free I’m free and I’m funny, goddamnit!”

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Whether or not you enjoyed the recent Michael Bay-produced Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot, one thing is undeniable: it was sorely lacking in Bebop and Rocksteady. Rumor has it that they appeared in an earlier draft of the script that took our heroes to Dimension X, and now new concept art has emerged supporting that fact. Take a look at what could have been courtesy of The Aaron Sims Company, and let’s hope that we’ll see these guys in the inevitable Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2. [ScreenCrush]
