Are Mother Boxes the Infinity Stones of DC’s Extended Universe?

Welcome to our first Nerdist News dispatch live from San Diego Comic-Con 2017! We hit the ground running today and beelined right for the convention floor to check out every possible detail that DC had to offer about Justice League at their impressive station. Sure, we were enamored with the beautiful costumes, but we think the biggest hints from their booth have to do with these three mysterious boxes:

So what are they? They are Mother Boxes and they are the ticket to understanding the supernatural forces of the DCEU. They are akin to Marvel’s Infinity Stones in that they each have supernatural applications–telepathy, teleportation, healing, etc–and Justice League‘s villain Steppenwolf is trying to hunt them all down à la Thanos. They were created by the New Gods and were scattered after their first war with Earth a thousand years ago.

Previously we saw a Mother Box in the first trailer for Justice League, and we know that the humans, Atlanteans, and Themyscirans will unite in the prologue of Justice League to defeat Darkseid and acquire the Mother Boxes that ultimately send Steppenwolf on his quest to recover them. Additonally, we glimpsed three boxes in the extended cut of Batman V Superman when Steppenwolf showed them to Lex Luthor. Based on recent toy reveals, however, it feels likely that Steppenwolf was asking Luthor for his help finding three remaining boxes.

So how will this all shake out in Justice League? Will Steppenwolf successfully steal the Mother Boxes from Earth? Will he have an easier time finding the human Mother Box since it’s attached to a hulking, semi-mechanical man? Will the Amazons get to team up with the Justice League to prevent Steppenwolf from acquiring the Themysciran Mother Box? According to a LEGO leak: maybe. Let us know what you think in the comments!

Also if you are in San Diego, be sure to stop by Nerdist and Geek & Sundry’s Conival this year for laser-tag, tabletop gaming, and much more! To join in on the fun, head over to the Marina Terrace at the Marriott Marquis & Marina, 11AM to 5PM from Thursday, July 20 through Saturday, July 22. We hope to see you!
