More Than You Thought You’d Want To Know About Time Zones

The BBC has a really interesting section today about time zones.

Time zones? Interesting? How?

Well, you don’t really think much about time zones, but there are interesting stories behind how they were created, and weird situations like how they decide what time it is in space:

You’ll also find where two zones are on the same time but on different days, a spot where three countries and three time zones converge in one confusing Arctic Circle town, the country that’s 45 minutes off from the usual hourly increments, how one massive country has nine time zones while another has just one, and more, all on an interactive spinning globe. Go check it out here; it’s worth some time to meander around the world and learn a little about the time you’re wasting.

Something extra nerdy. Depending on how long an astronaut is in space by the time he returns to the surface he has traveled x amount of time in the future. Only small amount, seconds.

  2. Christian says:

zOMG! Sarah Palin would have a field trip about time travelling with this info! #justhadtogetthatoutofmysystem

Pretty crazy that “time” can also have political influence.

  3. No problem, Tyson. I can take it…

  4. Tyson says:

Terribly sorry Walker, I’ll try ‘pointlessly mock of the right poster’ next time.

    P.S Sorry Chris

P.P.S Perry, just taking the p155.

  5. Lisa G says:

[nerdgasm] I thought I was the only person in the world who was fascinated by time zones. Seriously. I always get glazed-over eyes when I talk about a city being an hour, or a day, behind its neighbor. The screen saver on my phone is a world map with time zones and day/night indicated! [/nerdgasm]

  6. Blame me. Chris is innocent.

  7. Walker says:

@Tyson. Chris didn’t say it, Perry did. Look at the byline in the post so you can pointlessly mock of the right poster.

    Liked the video btw…

  8. Tyson says:

I’m sorry?! Chris did you just say ‘Interesting stories behind time zones’?
