More SNL News: Comedian Pete Davidson Joining Cast

Saturday Night Live is teeing up a big 40th season including an anniversary special scheduled for February 2015 and multiple cast shakeups, including both firings and hirings. We can add one more to the “hiring” column with Deadline reporting that up-and-coming stand up comedian Pete Davidson is joining the cast this season.

SNL said goodbye to three featured players this season (Brooks Wheelan, Noël Wells and John Milhiser) in addition to veteran Nasim Pedrad also leaving to join the cast of the Fox sitcom Mulaney. The news also comes on the heels of The Daily Show with Jon Stewart correspondent Michael Che being tapped to co-anchor the Weekend Update desk with co-head writer Colin Jost. Cecily Strong, who occupied the desk with Seth Meyers before his departure to host Late Night for NBC and then with Jost for the rest of the 39th season, will remain on the show as a featured player.

According to Deadline, Davidson, a New York native, was discovered by Nick Cannon on the stand-up scene and has appeared on several of Cannon’s television projects including Nick Cannon Presents: Wild ‘N Out and Guy Code, both for MTV2. Davidson also appeared in Cannon’s film School Dance, and has been featured on Andy Samberg’s Golden Globe winning show Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

Guardians of the Galaxy and Parks and Recreation star Chris Pratt will host the season premiere on Saturday, September 27 with Ariana Grande performing as the musical guest. That episode will be followed by Sarah Silverman hosting and Maroon 5 as musical guest the next week.
