It’s a new Mondo thing! A couple, actually.
If you didn’t nab one of Mondo’s Comic-Con exclusive posters for Guardians of the Galaxy over the weekend, the print and tee maker have some other sci-fi prints they’re willing to sell you. From August 29th through September 15th, Austin’s Mondo Gallery will host “Harsh Majical,” presenting the work of Australian artists We Buy Your Kids, and they’ve got prints from Cronenberg’s The Fly and Ridley Scott’s Alien to prove it.
Mondo artists have already put their own spin on the pair of films, but We Buy Your Kids have done a good job of owning their unique designs, particularly the biomechanical nightmare of the Alien print. Both posters remind me of the infamous Polish domestic posters for Hollywood films, which seize on one visual element from the movie (sometimes not even yet seen by the artist) and blow them up into a million odd pieces.
The gallery offered a brief bio of We Buy Your Kids, which is Sonny Day and Biddy Maroney, making their second trip to Mondo following their 2012 show, “Tina’s Mom’s Boyfriend.” The duo blend hand-made and digital elements to create their work. Their show will also include prints based on the Wesley Snipes/Woody Harrelson team-up White Men Can’t Jump and the sci-fi oddity Robinson Crusoe on Mars.
If you’re in Austin, there will be an opening reception for “Harsh Majical” on Friday, August 29th from 7 -10pm at the Mondo Gallery, located at 4115 Guadalupe St. in Austin, TX.
