Mondo Collectibles Going Large with 1/6 Scale TMNT Figures

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles has been popular for decades now in a variety of formats, and each iteration has had its fair share of toys and collectibles. It all started with Eastman & Laird’s comic one-shot from 1984. The popularity of that single issue led to an ongoing series, and the popularity of the series spun into a Saturday morning cartoon series, a string of live-action movies, an animated movie, a new animated Nickelodeon series that was recently renewed for a fifth season, and … that new live-action Michael Bay movie.

MONDO, creators of fine screen print products and collectibles, will be releasing 1/6 scale figures based on the original Eastman & Laird series starting Thursday, 8/27. The full set will include the four brothers, and will kick off with the release of Leonardo. The figures come with interchangeable parts and a range of accessories that make the $150 price tag a little more palatable.

The figures will each come with an original red mask head — the brothers all wore red masks until the introduction of their 1987 cartoon counterparts — as well as the blue, orange, purple, and red masks that have become more identifiable with each Turtle.

Leonardo’s full set of accessories include:

  • Classic Comic Red Mask Head
  • Cartoon Blue Mask Head
  • Dual Katana and Scabbards
  • 1 set of C-Grip Hands
  • 1 set of Climbing Claw Hands
  • Unique “Pointing Finger of Leadership” Hand
  • 2 Four-Point Shuriken
  • 2 Eight-Point Shuriken
  • Grappling Hook and Cord
  • Utrom Blaster
  • Belt with Scabbard Straps
  • Pre-Mutation Splinter
  • Pre-Mutation Baby Leonardo

Each figure is priced at $149.99, but a MONDO-exclusive version will be available for $159.99. Limited to 500 reproductions, the exclusive version of Leonardo comes with a reproduction of Shredder’s destroyed gauntlet. Given MONDO’s history with merchandise, when the exclusives are gone, they’re gone. A subscription service (limited to 200 customers) for the MONDO exclusives will be available starting Thursday as well, and each subscriber will be charged when pre-orders for each figure go live. Word of warning, if you go the subscription route, don’t expect to back out halfway through; all sales are final.

In addition to the jumbo action figures, MONDO has ceramic pins and screen print posters available. The pins include the faces of the four turtles, as well as Casey Jones’ hockey mask. The poster was drawn by Rich Kelly, and depicts Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: Secret of the Ooze. In it, Rahzar and Tokka look far more fearsome than their on-screen doughnut-loving counterparts.

Stay tuned to MONDO’s website and Twitter feed for news on availability for the Leonardo figure and subscription offer.

MONDO produced a short video that goes behind the scenes of the sculpting process with Phil Ramirez, who worked not only on the 1/6 scale project, but on the first run of Playmates action figures as well:
