IDW to Release a TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES Board Game Next Year

Over the weekend at San Diego Comic-Con, there were plenty of stories that seemed to get lost in the fanfare of Batman v. Superman and Deadpool trailers. Luckily, one did not escape the watchful eye of Chris Sims over at Comics Alliance. It seems that IDW Games plans to release a big-box board game based on their popular current run on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

The game, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shadows Of The Past, is being designed by Descent creator Kevin Wilson, and will feature art from Kevin Eastman, one of the co-creators of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles back in the mid-80s.

Here’s the official description for the game as stated by IDW:

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shadows of the Past will be a scenario-driven campaign game that features story content from the hit ongoing IDW comic. Two to five players will battle their way through a series of 60-90 minute missions where players develop their characters strengths, fighting styles, and equipment along the way to create a lasting story arc. Fan-favorite characters like Casey Jones and Alopex will appear throughout the missions, as the Turtles call on their closest allies for help in battling their deadliest foes.

For anyone familiar with Wilson and his game Descent, this style of game is nothing new. Built almost like a simplified version of Dungeons & Dragons, Descent saw players choosing pre-made fantasy heroes to take on quests through a dungeon that could be built from various card tiles, all while battling by dice rolls and gaining XP to level up. The game holds a lot of depth and replay value, but it’s tough not to make it sound like D&D-Lite with a quick explanation.

This is in no way meant to be a slight against the game, though, and adding the TMNT element is actually a clever twist on the style. Obviously Kevin Eastman agrees. “I’m so excited to participate in this game!” said Eastman in a release on IDW’s site.

“Working with IDW on their Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comics has been amazing, and now to get the chance to go even deeper into the story and have fans play out key moments from the series for themselves is something that’s really going to blow people away.”

Be on the lookout for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shadows Of The Past sometime in 2016.
