Mondo Announces Toy Line, Will Break the Internet With IRON GIANT Figures

This morning, Mondo announced the latest step in their campaign to acquire all of the monies of movie geeks the world over, kicking off a new line of toys with figures based on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the master of suspense, Alfred Hitchcock, and the Iron m-f’ing Giant.

The pair of figures from latter will probably sell out quickly if Mondo is doing its usual limited run thing. Mondo is releasing both a 16″ tall replica of the Iron Giant himself as well as a 6″ bolt prop from the film. The Iron Giant will have 30 points of articulation, lights, accessory pieces of scrap metal, a gun (for his “War” transformation), an “S” insignia, and an accompanying Hovarth figure. Mondo didn’t make pricing available in the announcement.

It’s kind of a coup for the 15-year-old movie, which was largely abandoned by Warner Bros. and received almost no marketing support (and zero toys) during its release. Well, that’s not entirely true: early VHS copies included a little plastic version of the alien robot, but there was really nothing else to commemorate the release.

And if you haven’t found enough Ninja Turtles swag to break your bank with the series’ 30th anniversary, Mondo has announced a pair of figures making their debut during the Con. The first is the Lil Mikey Vinyl Figure, reproducing Mike Mitchell’s chibi-style Michelangelo design which would have been right at home during the ongoing iam8bit gallery show.

Lil Mikey will be joined by The First Turtle, an early “joke” design from co-creators Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird. This derpy turtle is getting a black and white, 6″ figure.

Finally, old Hitch is getting a 1/6-scale figure, complete with director’s chair, cigars, props, interchangeable props and hands.

The new line of toys will make its debut during Comic-Con at booth #835, with more details about release date and preorder opportunities to happen soon-ish via the Mondo News twitter account.

  1. Alan says:

Are there any of these toys available that are non-collector prices? I just want one for my kid to play with.

  2. James says:

    ‘Hovart’? That’s Hogarth!

  3. Todd says:

The writers should do their work, Mondo has already said the toys will be avail by preorder first, not by the scalper friendly usual mondo methods.

  4. chevron says:

The lil Mikey kills me with the ice cream truck turtle on a stick, the bleeding colors and offset gumball eyes are too much!! Nostalgia ftw!

  5. Mojo says:

Okay Charlie, do your homework before you write an article. Are you a noob? There were several Iron Giant action figures when the film released ranging from 6 inches to 18 inches. Jeez, it’s just a Google away!

  6. augie says:

I was lucky enough to get the 12 inch, the 8 inch and a talking bank off of ebay for a decent price. I wish this new toy line was following the release of the iron giant 2.

  7. Nick says:

    The kid’s name was “Hogarth.”

  8. Travis says:

That’s not 100% accurate.  There were some IRON GIANT toys produced by Trendmasters.  In fact some of them became very pricey not long after the film trickled out of theaters.

  9. Actually the now-defunct Trendmasters made a kick-ass Iron Giant figure about the same size as this. It was electronic, fully articulated, and came with a wee Hogath figure. It’s a Holy Grail among collectors.
