Molly Ringwald Joins Cast of the JEM & THE HOLOGRAMS Movie

The big screen version of Jem and the Holograms just got even more ’80s on us. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Molly Ringwald, known for her iconic roles in such ’80s teen movies as Sixteen Candles, Pretty in Pink and The Breakfast Club, has joined the cast. The Jem movie is being directed by Jon M. Chu and will star Nashville actress Aubrey Peeples as Jerrica Benton, a/k/a Jem, while Stefanie Scott, Aurora Perrineau and Hayley Kiyoko will play the Holograms. The part of Jem’s purple haired love interest Rio is being played by Ryan Guzman. This follows news that broke yesterday via Deadline that actress Juliette Lewis is also joining the production, in another unspecified role.

So the question is, just who are these two playing?? Are they supposed to be members of rival “bad girl” band the Misfits? Even though both actresses are in their forties and the Misfits are supposed to be contemporaries of the Holograms? I suppose in this reinvention, the Misfits could be aging rockers who want to stamp out and destroy Millennial pop group Jem and the Holograms (as if I needed even more reason to side with the Misfits than before.)

Or, maybe Molly Ringwald is playing Synergy, the computer program that provides all the holograms for the group and wears a fierce Jane Fonda workout video headband. I still think RuPaul should play Synergy, but I can live with Ringwald. Molly Ringwald also recently released an album, where she released a jazz version of  Simple Mind’s “Don’t You Forget About Me” from The Breakfast Club, so it’s  likely this is going to be a singing part of some kind. Can you picture Molly Ringwald as a bad girl? I guess we’ll find out when the Jem movie hits theaters.

Is she gonna be Mrs Bailey (Jerrica’s Housekeeper) or Joanie (Starlight Musics Secretary)? She could be Jerrica’s mom too (Jacqui) or Linsday Peirce?
