One of the many cool things about the Halloween season is that it’s the only time of year that you can buy General Mills’ monster cereals from your local grocery store. Introduced back in 1971, the monster cereals were essentially kiddie versions of the old Universal horror movie monsters from the 1930’s and ’40s. There was Count Chocula, Franken-Berry, Boo-Berry, Frute Brute, and Fruity Yummy Mummy.
Although the cereals were part of every Gen-X age kid’s breakfast (Frute Brute gets a nice visual shout out from Quentin Tarantino in Pulp Fiction), General Mills eventually withdrew the cereals from circulation. It eventually brought them back as nostalgic Halloween season exclusives.
But what if the monster cereals were introduced today? What we think of as the “classic” horror movie monsters nowadays are the ones from the ’70s and ’80s, so naturally they’d probably reflect the slashers and other assorted maniacs from that era.
With that in mind, the folks at Halloween Costume decided to imagine what monster cereals based on more recent horror icons would actually look like. Represented are Jason Voorhees from Friday the 13th, Freddy Krueger from A Nightmare on Elm St., Pinhead from Hellraiser, the Xenomorph from Alien, the shark from Jaws and Krampus, the Christmas demon of Germanic legend that is the subject of the upcoming film of the same name. Sadly, Halloween’s Michael Myers seems to be missing for some reason. Maybe next year guys?
